We often think of an individual like a growing tree. When a tree begins to wilt, we don’t just look at the leaves. We look at the soil, the water, the sunlight, and the entire ecosystem around it. The same applies when a child absconds from school. Rather than focusing only on the behaviour, we take a step back and ask: What is happening at home? What is happening at school? What pressures is the child carrying? How are the adults around them being supported? In one such situation, support extended far beyond one-on-one therapy. We worked closely with the family to reduce stress and strengthen routines, collaborated with the school to adjust expectations and supports, and liaised with other professionals involved in the child’s care. As the environment around the child became more supportive, we began to see change — not just in behaviour, but in confidence, emotional regulation, and engagement. The child who once struggled to remain at school was soon participating more consistently in class.
