Elizabeth Rocha is a well-respected couple and family therapist, mental health social worker and trauma psychotherapist who is passionate about therapy and counselling. Elizabeth has a good understanding of the issues of disability persons given her experience in case-management with the Department of Human Services and running groups with youth with intellectual disabilities. Elizabeth for the last 10 years has been a counsellor with Carers Victoria and has a solid understanding of the struggles, rewards and challenges for the carers of vulnerable family members.

She has a Masters in Couple and Family Therapy and began her career in the field of Fostercare and Adoption as a graduate of Social Work from Melbourne University in 1996. She has also completed a psychology degree, a Bachelor of Behavioural Science. For the past 17 years, she has been the Founder and Director of a boutique counselling clinic in Elsternwick, known as Glen Eira Counselling Clinic. She continues to be a strong activist for non-pathologizing mental health and understanding trauma through the lens of attachment.

Her theoretical approach is to treat couples and individuals as a relational system “with moving parts” that need to be speaking with each other in therapy sessions. The objective being to create systemic and positive change that is long-lasting. Her drive to offer her clients internationally recognised evidence-based therapies includes being Certified in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) and Emotion Focused Therapy for couples (ICEEFT). This has led to her expertise in the growing field of Attachment and Trauma Science as a trauma base therapist.

She shares her expertise as a clinical supervisor within the highly respected Australian Association of Family Therapists and the Australian Association of Social Workers. The goals of counselling persons with a disability are important from a gentle, respectful and equality-based framework. *using proper language to describe the person and the disability;  identifying personal and societal barriers encountered by individuals with disabilities;  devising a theoretical framework from which to understand adjustment to disability;  learning counseling techniques to enhance therapeutic effectiveness; and  being mindful of general counseling tips when working with persons with disabilities.
