The Gaming Den

Social Activities

From the provider: Phone: [phone hidden] | Email: Enquiries@thegamingden.com.au | Website: thegamingden.com.au Open 9am-6pm Mon-Fri & 9am-1pm Sat The Gaming Den is a safe and supportive gaming environment for people with autism, located in Ipswich, Queensland Our business started in mid 2020, as we were struggling to get my son, who was in his early 20s with ASD and ADHD, out of the house or to show interest in many things. He had the idea to find a place where he could play computer games with others who shared his interests. After looking around we were unable to find a place where he would feel safe, but with encouragement from his psychologist and occupational therapist we started The Gaming Den together. We have worked hard to create a space where my son and others on the Autism spectrum are able to feel safe and comfortable. We are equipped with 10 computers containing over 300 games, two racing machines, and an immersive VR setup. There are also board games available. We mainly focus on single-player and local multiplayer games to avoid the sometimes difficult to manage online communities. Our games include Minecraft, Skyrim, Age of Empires, Mass Effect, the Witcher series, Baldur’s Gate 3, the Borderlands series and more. Our doors are open for all ages, though under 16s require a support worker or guardian to stay with them while they game, over 16 years welcome to come independently or with their support worker. We do recommend anyone of any age bring along a support worker or someone comfortable initially to help with the new space and new faces. There is a fridge and microwave for storing and heating meals, a table to eat at, a designated quiet area, and plenty of free on-site parking. For the last 3 years we have been servicing the Ipswich and Brisbane area, with NDIS participants being the target audience. We are not NDIS registered and ask that our clients are plan managed or self managed. We offer the first session for free to see if we are a good fit with no pressure to return afterwards if it doesn’t suit.

From the provider: Australians with disability are more likely than those without disability to have experienced violence, abuse or sexual harassment at some point in their lives. Some people with disability, such as those with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities, are more likely to experience violence. Many excellent services are available for individuals who have experienced abuse and violence, such as hotlines, counselling services, emergency accommodation and crisis response. However, we teach learners what to do whilst they are in an unwanted situation to de-escalate and be able torespond in real time before the situtaion gets worse. We believe we ALL have a human right to feel safe and live lives free from violence and fear. Learning self-protection skills empowers the individual and reduces the chance of experiencing trauma and needing life-long therapy and counselling due to being violated. Antonella teaches individuals skills to recognise abuse, violence, red flags, toxic and manipulative behaviours and respond in real-time, reducing the chance that the individual becomes another statistic.Empowerment Self Defense (ESD) is an evidence-based primary violence prevention system taught by a highly trained female instructor who teaches you to recognise the spectrum of violence and red flags and respond to it by using psychological awareness tools, verbal strategies, and physical techniques to prevent you from becoming a victim of violence. Scenarios cover everyday life situations, i.e. at work, school, with friends, family, and also worst-case such as sexual assault. What is ESD? Empowerment Self Defence (ESD) is a global, holistic, evidence-based primary violence prevention framework taught by Antonella Spatola, a highly trained international female instructor who understands the issues people with disability deal with. She teaches easy-to-learn skills and techniques to recognise the spectrum of abuse, violence, green, orange and red flags and respond to them using psychological awareness tools, verbal strategies, and physical methods to prevent becoming a victim of violence. All skills are easy to learn, remember and apply. Scenarios cover everyday life situations, e.g. work, school, with friends, family, and also worst-case such as sexual assault. ESD is specifically designed with the participant’s ability and needs in mind. Antonella has been teaching NDIS participants for over six years. We know that not all individuals have the 'same' ability to defend themselves. Still, all individuals are capable of resistance training and learning ESD will increase their confidence and skills. ESD training allows the participant to experience an integrated approach based on research that points to the benefits of ESD training that shows training can be effective in preventing assault and supports healing compared to those that do not take any activity (J. Hollander & J. Cunningham, 2020). Antonella empowers NDIS participants through violence prevention education and accessible training programs. Programs are specifically designed to be supportive, sustainable, comprehensive, inclusive, and empowering, with a focus on promoting healing and resiliency through a trauma-informed approach. Prioritising meaningful collaborations with NDIS participants and community organisations in a coordinated effort is vital to promote urgently needed primary prevention education.

Understanding Social Activities in Queensland

Social Activities providers play a vital role in helping NDIS participants achieve their goals and live more independently. In Queensland, providers assist with a wide range of activities tailored to individual NDIS plans and support needs.

What Services Do Social Activities Providers Offer?

Providers in Queensland offer diverse services tailored to individual NDIS plans. Common support categories include:

  • Daily Living Assistance: Help with personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, and medication management
  • Community Participation: Support to attend social activities, shopping trips, recreational outings, and community events
  • Skill Development: Training to build independence in areas like cooking, budgeting, and public transport use
  • Therapeutic Support: Access to allied health professionals including OTs, psychologists, and speech therapists

Choosing the Right Provider

Finding the right provider is essential for achieving your NDIS goals. Consider these factors:

Experience & Qualifications

Look for providers with relevant experience in your specific support needs and appropriate certifications.

Cultural & Language Fit

Queensland's diverse community means you can find providers who speak your language and understand your cultural background.

Availability & Flexibility

Ensure the provider can accommodate your preferred schedule, whether weekdays, weekends, or evenings.

NDIS Registration Status

NDIS registered providers meet quality and safety standards. Self-managed participants can also choose unregistered providers.

NDIS Funding for Social Activities

Services are typically funded under the Core Supports or Capacity Building budget categories in your NDIS plan. Costs vary based on:

  • Time of service (standard hours, evenings, weekends, public holidays)
  • Complexity of support required
  • Provider qualifications and experience
  • Travel requirements

Plan-managed and self-managed participants have greater flexibility in choosing providers and negotiating rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Social Activities providers cost in Queensland?

Social Activities rates in Queensland follow the NDIS Price Guide limits. Costs vary based on the type of support, time of service (standard hours, evenings, weekends), worker qualifications, and travel requirements. Plan-managed and self-managed participants have greater flexibility in choosing providers and negotiating rates.

What's the difference between registered and unregistered NDIS providers?

NDIS registered providers have met quality and safety standards set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Agency-managed participants must use registered providers. Self-managed and plan-managed participants can choose either registered or unregistered providers, giving more flexibility in their choices.

Can I change my Social Activities provider if it's not working out?

Yes, you have the right to change providers at any time. Review your service agreement for notice periods and discuss any concerns with your provider first. If you're unhappy with the service, you can end the agreement and find a new provider that better meets your needs.

How do I find Social Activities providers who speak my language?

Use the Language filter at the top of this page to find providers offering support in your preferred language. Queensland has providers available in many languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, and more. You can also specify language requirements when contacting providers directly.

What qualifications should Social Activities providers have?

All NDIS workers must have a valid NDIS Worker Screening Check. Many hold qualifications like Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability, or relevant allied health degrees. Specialist providers may have additional training in specific disability types. Always ask providers about their qualifications and experience.
