Meyer Institute

Psychology

From the provider: Meyer Institute provides respectful, practical and evidence-informed psychological services for NDIS participants, applicants, families and support teams. We support children, adolescents and adults who may be experiencing disability-related challenges, emotional distress, trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioural concerns, neurodevelopmental differences, cognitive difficulties or reduced everyday functioning. Our aim is to help each person better understand their needs, build useful skills and access supports that are appropriate to their circumstances. Services are tailored to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. We take time to understand the person’s strengths, goals, support environment, communication needs and the barriers affecting their participation, independence and wellbeing. Psychological therapy may assist with: • Anxiety, worry, panic and emotional distress • Depression, low mood and reduced motivation • Trauma and post-traumatic stress symptoms • Emotional regulation and behavioural difficulties • Adjustment to disability, diagnosis or major life changes • Social confidence and interpersonal difficulties • Chronic pain and adjustment to illness or injury • Sleep problems and psychological contributors to insomnia • Attention, organisation and executive functioning difficulties • Building coping skills, independence and everyday capacity Therapy is collaborative, goal-focused and adapted to the person’s level of understanding, communication style and support needs. Where appropriate and with consent, we can work alongside family members, carers, support coordinators, allied health practitioners, schools and other professionals. Psychological assessments Meyer Institute also provides psychological and cognitive assessments for children, adolescents and adults. Assessments can help clarify a person’s abilities, difficulties, functional needs and the types of support that may be most useful. Assessment services may include: • Intelligence and cognitive assessment • Child and adult IQ testing • Adaptive functioning assessment • Academic achievement and learning assessment • Attention and executive functioning assessment • ADHD assessment and screening • Autism assessment and screening • Memory assessment • Emotional and behavioural assessment • Personality and psychological functioning assessment • Cognitive and functional assessment Assessments are selected according to the referral question and the individual’s circumstances. The process may involve clinical interviews, standardised testing, questionnaires, review of previous reports and information from parents, carers, teachers or other professionals where consent is provided. Reports are written in clear language and aim to explain the person’s strengths, areas of difficulty, functional impact and practical recommendations. NDIS applications, reviews and evidence reports We assist participants and applicants who require psychological evidence for an NDIS application, plan reassessment, change-of-situation request or review of current supports. NDIS-related reports may address: • The nature and likely permanence of the person’s condition • Cognitive, emotional, behavioural or adaptive functioning • The impact of disability on daily activities and participation • Support needs across home, education, work and community settings • Capacity-building goals and recommended psychological supports • The relationship between assessment findings and functional impairment • Recommendations for therapy, assessment, skill development and additional supports Reports are individually prepared and are not based on generic templates. We aim to provide clear evidence that is useful to participants, families, support coordinators and other decision-makers. Our approach We recognise that contacting a psychologist or arranging an assessment can feel overwhelming. We therefore aim to explain the process clearly, provide realistic expectations and make appointments as comfortable and accessible as possible. We use evidence-informed approaches and maintain a strengths-focused perspective. This means identifying not only the person’s difficulties, but also their abilities, interests, existing supports and opportunities for growth. Referrals are welcomed directly from participants and families, as well as from support coordinators, plan managers, general practitioners, psychiatrists, allied health professionals, schools, community organisations and disability service providers. Appointments may be available in person at selected Melbourne locations or by telehealth, depending on the service required and the suitability of remote delivery. Some interviews, therapy appointments, questionnaires and assessment components can be completed by secure video consultation. Please contact Meyer Institute to discuss the reason for referral, current support needs, appointment availability and whether our services are suitable for the participant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Psychology providers cost in New South Wales?

Psychology rates in New South Wales follow the NDIS Price Guide limits. Costs vary based on the type of support, time of service (standard hours, evenings, weekends), worker qualifications, and travel requirements. Plan-managed and self-managed participants have greater flexibility in choosing providers and negotiating rates.

What's the difference between registered and unregistered NDIS providers?

NDIS registered providers have met quality and safety standards set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Agency-managed participants must use registered providers. Self-managed and plan-managed participants can choose either registered or unregistered providers, giving more flexibility in their choices.

Can I change my Psychology provider if it's not working out?

Yes, you have the right to change providers at any time. Review your service agreement for notice periods and discuss any concerns with your provider first. If you're unhappy with the service, you can end the agreement and find a new provider that better meets your needs.

How do I find Psychology providers who speak my language?

Use the Language filter at the top of this page to find providers offering support in your preferred language. New South Wales has providers available in many languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, and more. You can also specify language requirements when contacting providers directly.

What qualifications should Psychology providers have?

All NDIS workers must have a valid NDIS Worker Screening Check. Many hold qualifications like Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability, or relevant allied health degrees. Specialist providers may have additional training in specific disability types. Always ask providers about their qualifications and experience.
